We have a double socket in the hallway with a lamp and the router plugged in

After turning the lamp off tonight by the switch on the socket, we soon noticed that the Internet had stopped working despite that not being switched off

The socket that the router was plugged in to appears to now be dead, nothing will turn on having tried couple of other devices. Router works in other sockets.

Does this pattern indicate anything in particular? Seems strange that turning the lamp switch off has somehow meant the other socket in no longer working

Any thoughts/advice much appreciated

The switch is broken.

This is quite unusual unless the socket is very very old, or of an inferior brand, but it can happen if dust or grit has got into the mechanism, either from not brushing out the box after drilling the wall, or if there has been a water leak washing dirty water into it.

Most probably.

Well!
It may be unusual but it can and does happen,
even with "Good Brands" - in the long run.

However, a "broken" switch usually has lost some of its "clickyness",
because it isn't working "as designed" - on the inside.
