Hi all!

We're in the process of having a complete home rewire done along with plumbing new ceilings and new decor

In the kitchen my dear wife has decided she'd like some down lights

We've roughly worked out with the electrician that about 8 would be sufficient

The room is 5m long and 2m wide exactly. With the top units coming out 40cm we (wife and I) worked out the lights should be 60cm from the walls, with a central light point in the middle for a dome style light unit.

Does this sound about right?

The electrician is more than happy for us to find the lights etc and we've narrowed it down to this one

In short they're Sylvania adjustable mains power fire rated downlights

Would these be sufficient? Somewhere down the line we'd want to put good quality led bulbs in, is there anything we should specify with regards to the wiring? They will be in two rows of 4 or 5 individually switched, potentially dimmable

Advice is appreciated!

Don't do it. Our (4.7m by 2.7m) kitchen had 8 downlights fitted when we moved in (at 50 watt each, so pretty bright). Although they looked great, the lighting was absolutely abysmal. They were perhaps set a little further into the room than you suggest but you were permanently in their shadow. The only bit of the room they lit up properly was the two feet directly below them.

Why do you think you need fire rated fittings? Have you looked at proper LED down lights rather than trying to fit LED lamps into standard fittings?

600mm from the walls and then every 1000mm between is the standard spacing we use in kitchens and it works really well.

And design in some under cupboard lights so that you can see what you are doing on the worktop!

and make sure there's at least one downlight over the sink.

Downlights do what they say > DOWN LIGHT

Having connect 4 lighting configuration is a very inefficient use of lighting. You need lighting where it's actually required.

In our kitchen we have one above the sink at 300mm from wall, above the worktops at their edge and at 600mm intervals, then a few in the middle spaced to spread light on dark areas of the floor and doorways etc.

Use adjustable lights on the mid-floor ones and don't worry about what they look like on the ceiling - nobody looks up there!
