Downpowering my alarm

Hello all,

I'm in a huge fix and would really appreciate some advice. My flat came with an ADT alarm fitted by the previous owners. I never took out the contact, and enquired with them about having it switched off, but the £150 they wanted was a little steep! So I just left it and haven't been using it.

Then at 5am this morning it went off, saying there was a fire! There must be a fault in the system (since there was no fire).

I'm due to go away for Christmas tomorrow, and can't really leave this thing powered up to annoy my neighbours over Christmas randomly going off, so I have to find a way to shut it off.

It's a Honeywell Galaxy 2-12, with internal and external sounders. Looks like it has a lot of tamper proofing on it too :( I have a code to shut off the sounder, but I don't think it's an engineer one as the panel is now demanding a "Manager reset" or something similar, and my code does nothing for this.

As a crude approach, I could simply disconnect it from the mains, take out its battery back up, and wait for the battery's in the sounders to die. I've been told this is about 20 mins. But if any of you have a more intelligent way of shutting it off I would love to hear it.

Thank you!

Thats probably the easiest quick DIY fix.

The external sounder will have a timer built in and will sound for no longer than 20 mins.

If you have a ladder, you could disconnect the battery in the bell box to stop it ringing.

There is usually some form of hard reset on the inside of the panel to get back to the factory defaults, so if at some point in the future if you want to re-instate the alarm and run it unmanaged, that will probably be possible. For the time being, what you already propose sounds like it will get the job done.

there is no hard reset facility within the Galaxy g2/12/20/44 or the g3 range
you will need to do a few more things before yopu can restart the system,
also most ADT systems do not have an external; siren unit (just a decoy box) but to conform with EN50131 and PD6662 they fit an internal SAB (self activating bell) siren unit with battery back up,
they normally use elmdean units so all you have to do is diss the battery from the terminal block.

yep i fit galaxy !!!!! love em.

also scantronic and other various panels over the years
over 25 years fitting alarms / cctv fire systems

You'll be more than welcome on this forum then. I don't think we really have a galaxy expert on here, so I'm sure any advice you could offer will be greatfully received. :D

Texecom is my panel of choice, but each to their own

i can work with the Texacom, but i really do like the Galaxy range

its the only panel and accessories that i know that if i come accross a 15 year old galaxy 60 with a mark one keypad, and the keypad is faulty, all you have to do is cahnge it for a galaxy mark 7 keypad

we used to use only Gardtech, but they started changing bits and pieces that new part for the old panel wont interface, so i moved to galaxy, and stayed there !!!

if you get any questions for them just let me know, i will try to help out, obviously i cannot give out the engineer codes online for the nationals,, that isnt right.

if I buy a second-hand galaxy panel and keypad, is it a reasonable DIY job to install it with PIRs and siren?

or does it designed to prevent the amateur from tinkering?

I work as an Intruder Service Engineer for ADT and have done for over 14 years. Been in the trade for 20 years.
The simplest way for a novice is to simply as already suggested remove the fuse from the fuse spare THEN open up the main control panel and remove both of the leads to the battery these are spade ends located at the top of the battery.

Again sorry for the resurrection and slight hijack

Hi all it's my first post so be gentle with me ;)
Hope you guys don't mind me re-opening this thread but its the closest to the problem i'm having and you all seem very knowledgeable, so I hope you will help.
I bought & moved into my new house in March, which had an ADT Galaxy 2 system already installed, as I'm a first time buyer and being stretched to the limit already I declined taking the ADT contract, but want to at least have some form of protection. I want to fit an external sounder etc. but I'm getting the "Manager Reset Needed" have tried the default codes etc with no luck. My question is can this system be reset to factory default? and if so can somebody tell me how? I have the installation manual and am happy to attempt setting the system up from scratch (although I may be back to ask for more help from time to time).

If you have manager reset required, then most probably an activation either whilst the alarm was set or maybe a tamper activation - maybe you opened the control box or took a cover off a detector or siren.
The way to reset it is to either enter the manager code - sometimes known as a master code - default could be 4, 5 or 6 digits - these being 1234, 12345 or 123456.
Are you able to speak to the previous occupier and maybe ask them for any codes that they know.
Once you have the correct code - type in the code press ent - bottom right on the keypad - if it is a G2 system the display well then show - Status Unset on the top row of text, on the bottom row it should show 1 event to view press <> - if it shows 1 event press the A key once then ENT then ESC twice - if it shows 2 events to view press the A key twice then ENT then ESC twice - if it shows 3 events to view - you got it press the A key 3 times then ENT then ESC.
If the 'fault has cleared ie the cover put back in place correctly if should reset fine - BTW there is no way of resetting the master code without the engineer code or the correct master code. Let us now how you go on.

The reset is needed because it can no longer access the phone line as i've changed from BT to VM. I also think it may go a bit deeper than me being able to get hold of the manager code as, as i'm led to believe, is only held by ADT and they don't like giving them up easily ;) As i don't really need it to call ADT anymore i was hoping i could use this as a stand alone alarm, as i said earlier adding an external sounder etc. I have the prox tags but can't use them as i have to open the panel door to override the fault of no comms every time i set the alarm, which is why i thought there might be a way of shorting some jumpers with a wire in side the panel or such taking everything back to default so i could set it up again as needed.
Thanks for the speedy reply btw.
Matt.

Hi - ADT do not 'keep' manager codes- they are not written down - put in safes - or kept on record anywhere the manager code is changed by the owner or 'manager' of the property. End of.
To do the changes you require maybe worthwhile contacting ADT and getting an engineer out as it involves some reprogramming, quite simple if you know the engineer code - factory default is 112233, but to change the codes to factory default also clears out all the memory, meaning you have to reprogram the system from scratch. Again not difficult for some.
Good luck. :)

I'm happy to reprogramme from scratch but need to know how to reset the system, codes and all, to defaults. Famous last words lol.
Ta Matt.

I believe the only way to do that is with the engineer's code. That allows you to reset the Master User code, and with that you can reset all the other codes (except the Engineer's code).

AFAIK there's no way to reset the engineer's code without changing the PCB. I guess it might be possible by connecting some external programmiong device, but there is nothing in the installers manual that tells you how it can be done.
