Drain Rod Retrieval??

Ah, the good old Steel Kane. Sorted a few blockages with these before. Couple of tips with using them for the unaware....

1. Buy the longest ones, short versions dont flex very well and are a pig to get into small pipes in deep chambers.

2. Dont argue with them. My gaffer went out 1 weekend on a call out. Got quite a few down the pipe, put crank on the end and gave it a good twist. Whole lot suddenly recoiled hitting him square in the chops. He lost 3 teeth and sliced his mouth to shreds.

The job of retreiving rods puts me in mind of the cable grippers that I've seen used for pulling telecomms cables into ducts. They are a bit like the old chinese finger puzzles, but bigger.

They are like a long, narrow conical basket woven from steel wire with an eye on the end to attach a draw rope. once slid over the end of a cable, the draw rope is pulled tight, the basket elongates and the diameter shrinks to grip the cable (or drain rod?). The harder you pull, the tighter it grips.
