I discovered a leak under the floor boards near the main inlet and I've tried tightening the valve but can't quiet tighten it enough that I'm confident it won't leak or come loose again as it's done once before. I'd like to put a new drain valve or cap it off. The spanner size to remove the drain valve fitting seems to be just under 26mm and the valve nut is 8.5mm but I'm guessing these are imperial sized fittings. Would anyone be able to confirm the size I'm looking for and what the replacement is actually called. Thanks

If you want to try something other than replacement which would require draining down, scrape off the crud, loosen it slightly and clean out as much as possible, then pu several winds of ptfe round the exposed thread and retighten. This could last until the time of year is more favourable.

If and when you decide to get around to draining the system down - If you unscrew that square end completely, on the end of it will be a simple, rubber tap washer, which has perished. Any plumbers merchant, will have a replacement for a few pence.

Turning off the water supply seemed to stop the water coming out and though I haven't unscrewed it completely. I do have a spare identical also worn valve assembly which if you are right and I can recondition it with a new washer I may be able to replace the current leaky one. Thanks
