drill press chuck & bits

just looking at a drill press, after reading about the chuck it says 16mm.... with MT2 (morse taper) will this accept normall streight shank drill bits? thanks.

Thanks. just wondered if normal were ok to use in a drill press.
 
Well the general idea of a drill press is to press drills into things. So yes, it'll take a normal drill.

The chuck will take ordinary parallel shank drills, but will be mounted on a 2MT arbour, which 'plugs' into the spindle.

If you wish to use Morse Taper shank bits, the chuck and it's arbour can be removed and the drill shank fits straight into the spindle in it's place.

If you do remove the arbour, keep the tapers clean. Bits of swarf trapped between the tapers will destroy it's self-locking, self-centring and driving qualities.
 
its best to pay a bit more and get a floor standing one

A reasonable suggestion should one have the floor space for a large pillar drill. I barely have the floor space for my feet and a stool in my shed!
 
so next time i am drilling 2" thick steel i can use a hole saw :eek:
