I was digging out the wall to sink the connectors for a wall-mounted light, and managed to drill into the ring main (or a spur from it). The cable is not completely severed and the outlet it appears to spur to upstairs still works. Since I'm planning to leave an open cavity in the wall behind the light fitting I was thinking that I could repair the damaged section of wire with a 30A terminal block & box. There would still be access by removing the mounting plate for the light fitting. It's a solid wall, so chasing out and running a new length of cable is a job I'd rather avoid.

Are there any problems with this approach?

Possibly the socket cable is in capping or tube and you could draw through a new cable.

If the terminal block is accessible and enclosed then it would be acceptable. Make sure you do repair it as it's a dangerous situation even if the socket is still working.

As skenk states, if the joint is accessible, it is allowed.
You could also consider crimping the joint, but as this will need a specialised tool, the conection block is the best way to go.
