Does that mean that everyone who has an RCD that does not comply with the current standards must change it before making additions to a circuit protected by it?
Does that mean that everyone who has an RCD that does not comply with the current standards must change it before making additions to a circuit protected by it?
So, the millions spent to date on RCDs and later RCBOs for only a possible minuscule benefit must now be repeated with a proportionately even tinier benefit.
...and then when nearly everyone has had one fitted, discover that they are the wrong type.
Is it the business of a non-statutory wiring regulation body to mandate these safety devices for non-electrical reasons and so little gain, yet rely on tradesmen to persuade the customer that they must have them fitted?
Surely, if such devices are deemed vital, then it should be the Building Regulations that make it the law - but they don't.
Surely connecting to an existing RCD does not create a significant hazard?
With the exception of making sure that earthing arrangements are adequate before carrying out work on an installation, the regs are not retrospective, so additions to a circuit thus protected can still be carried out without the need to carry out update work?
They are not, which means that any existing installation can be kept just as it is for as long as those responsible for it decide that is appropriate.
Additions and alterations are not existing installations and have two choices.
Either they comply with BS7671 or they do not.
If someone decides to not comply with BS7671, they would have to provide reasons and suitable evidence as to why the choices they have made do not impair safety.
