When using my SDS drill, I have often begun by drilling (into brick, for example) without the hammer action just to get a small depression to avoid wandering then, when turning on the hammer action, the bit goes straight through like a hot knife through butter. The difference is amazing.
I remember struggling in the past trying to drill into York stone slabs using an ordinary percussion drill. I could have done the same job in seconds using an SDS drill.
As far as I'm concerned, they are strongly recommended. The OP would not be disappointed.
