So.. I bought a kitchen tap some years ago off ebay (NO - please! No comments here!).

It now drips. It has ceramic discs. I have taken the disc round 8-10 plumbers merchants and it seems to be 'non standard' size. An import. Can't find a replacement.

So two questions:

1) Is there a specialist place which might source me a replacement? If so, and if it is not local to me, how do I measure/describe it to ensure I get a suitable replacement?

2) Assuming (as I now do) that 1 above is impossible, I'll have to get a new tap. So do taps have standard size ceramic discs as I don't want the same thing to happen 3 years down the line (and no, I won't get it off ebay this time!).

Sometimes you can get away with just cleaning the discs and putting silicone grease on them on reassembly. Worth a try.

Silicon may work for a short time but the dripping will start again, sometimes after only a matter of days.

Lunns in Farnborough sell just about any disc set you can buy. If they haven't got it it's not available. They sell online and their website, complete with close up photos of everything, is:-

I wouldn't chastise yourself too much for buying the taps off eBay. If they have lasted a couple of years that is longer than some of the tatt sold in the retails outlets these days. Same stuff, just different branding and a price to match.

One of he best UK brands is Bristan who have a huge range with prices to match all budgets.

Thanks to all those with constructive comments.

Wierd forum this - you guys seem to use it as a social medium as much as to offer help.

Still - got there in the end. New washer.

Or a new washer in an old set of taps that operates with discs?

Correct!

I was surprised, but I changed the washer on the end of the cartridge, dismantled, cleaned and replaced the discs and re-intalled in tap.

No drip.

Of course, there's no saying how long it will last, but I'm a glass half full person....

Go and buy a new tap.

Andy

Andy has got it right, "go buy a new tap" and make sure it is a branded tap, so you can get spares. I've used SMR Bathrooms many times to buy bathroom taps, as the are cheap, fast and reliable. They sell Hudson Reed and Crosswater, both good quality and you can always get spares. Forget eBay, it's a false economy!
