Don't know John, I checked everything and it all seemed to be in line with no slop anywhere, I am wondering if the tensioner has failed. I will be able to get a better look at it when I change the cambelt so if I find anything I will let you know.
Its been running perfectly for five years, just suddenly went yesterday, initially it was slipping intermittently and I did notice a smell of burning rubber but on inspection could see nothing wrong with the belt or its path.
I did wonder if I had picked up a stick or something going through the forest, I do occasionally pick up bits of branches underneath but there was no noise this time and it was 7 miles later that it started playing up.
