"Put the blame on DVD" doesn't have the same ring does it?
I bet DVD doesn't last as long as VCR did! there is already competition for it such as Blu-Ray.

Before DVD became a popular medium (I would say this happened in 1998, but I think it came out in 1996), people didn't really buy pre-recorded VHS tapes in the same manner that they now buy DVDs.

I remember what would happen in our house. Around October/November, they would start running trailers for all the Chrimbo films on TV, Dad would buy a massive stack of blank tapes, and we would watch the Christmas films on TV or tape them for later.

But now, my dad usually gets about 10 DVDs, my bro the same, me and my sis probably 5 or 6 each, and my mum a couple. And the last few years there has been s*d all on TV at Christmas other than the ubiquitous "Only Fools and Horses" special. So we watch DVDs mainly.

So I would say "DVD kill the VCR-(star), plus Chrimbo films on telly"

Oh, and Blu-Ray is still a few years off: it requires a blue diode laser, these currently sell in development quantities for around £1000 per module. This is why you can't buy blue laser pointers, despite the fact they would be freakin' cool.

Also the only currently-available design of blue laser diode is patented, so any manufacturer would be required to pay the patent holder. He will become a very rich man, could probably ask for £5-10 per player, but this will of course push the price up a bit. Don't know if they are any harder to make than the current IR diodes, but they will probably require new fabrication plants.

I have a green laser pointer. No relevance in that, just felt like showing off :D  It's green.

Prices these days drop dramatically as can be seen with the DVD recorders I give DVD's 5 years max.

A cheap VHS to DVD recorder for people with large tape libraries might sell a few for a while.

What annoys me is that with some older films released on DVD is that they look like they have just been ripped from a VHS copy! No attempt to use 5.1 or the better quality of image available...

I also think that the price of DVD players was kept artificially high for a long time and that if DVD players were cheaper before, then VHS would have died long ago. You could pick up a new VHS player for £50 when the cheapest DVD player was still about £100. I can't see it being cheaper to manufacture a VHS player with all those intricate moving parts?

How long will it be before digital terrestrial is transmitted in 5.1 and you can record in this format...? Think I'll wait a while before investing in DVD recording!

R.I.P.
Betamax
Video2000
Pioneer Laserdisc
Commodore CDTV
Vinyl
DAT
Minidisc - Well, not mine!

Daft thing is, they could have been doing this since the outset of onDigital aka ITV Digital aka Freeview. The DTT standard does allow for 5.1 sound, I believe. However, in order to keep equipment costs down and save a teeny little bit of bandwidth they decided to stick with 2 channel stereo sound.

What is really dumb is how some Sky channels are broadcast in 5.1, but only the Sky+ boxes are fitted with the necessary connectors.

Is that the Cadbury Dairy Milk with Tiffin? That particular bar was available in 1999, cos I ate one then. Ah, I remember it as if it were only 5 years ago... ;)

They were chocolate with crunchy pieces of biscuit and raisins, Yum Yum!

That sounds about right...

The other thing that annoys me. Freeview - What does that imply???

So, they then fill it with 'Top up TV'

Also, why do terrestial channels have SKY advertisments but SKY don't have terrestrial...

I do like nowadays tho that presenters freely recommend programmes on a competitors channel. That never used to happen.

Kendor,

while I think of it, you might like to know that Muller have a 'Rum & Raisin' fruit corner!!

Rather good too! :p
