DVD killed the VCR

I think it's Dixons that are advertising a £20 DVD player at the mo! Coincedence with their recent scrapping of VHS recorders???

I overheard the advert on TV, it sounded like you have to pay for it with a £20 note.

They can afford to do this since they sacked Linda Bloody Barker! :D

Currys, Dixons, Comet, PC World... all the same company

I have 2 questions:

1) Who is the non-famous woman on the Currys advert
2) When is she going to pose for FHM or similar? :D

Maybe she isn't good looking at all, it is just because she is always seen with Linda Barker (what an appropriate surname for a right old dog!). It's all about the contrast.

Kimber cables (the £8000+ kind, and some less expensive) can all be found at

http://www.russandrews.co.uk/ (The UK distributor)

Kimber's own website is at

An analogy would be to consider Porsche, Ferrari, Bentley. Having spent however much on a car of this calibre, when it comes time for new tyres, do you put on a premium product, or retreads from Kwik-Fit?

The £8000 cables are essentially commensurate with the type of audio system where the speakers cost, let's say, £30k, the amplification £10k, and source conmpnents £10k each. £8k seems like a lot less in this company...

People with more money than sense will splash out on them, regardless of the fact that it'll make sweet FA to the output that will be noticeable.

GRC - So you've tried them, have you..........?

for the cost versus effect then there is no contest! using good sized copper cable you would have to be someone pretty special with superhuman hearing to notice a difference if any!

Much as I agree, I suppose that it is all a matter of priority.

I view a car as something it is worth spending a lot of money on, so you can get one that makes you feel good and that you enjoy driving. But there are plenty of people who aim to get a car simply as a mode of transport, as cheaply as possible.

By analogy, people like GRC see a high-end audio system in the way that I would see a Ferrari. And sees a £200 midi system in the same way I would see a Peugeot 106. Does the job, nothing wrong with it, but isn't very inspiring or something to gaze longingly at.

I guess the difference is that with a Ferrari we all know it can definitely do 200mph, it can definitely do 0-60 in 4 seconds, whereas stereos are very subjective. You can't prove that one stereo sounds better than another in the same way you can't say if BurgerKing tastes better than McDonalds. It is a matter of taste. Flat tonal response makes some people cause gooey stains inside their pants, but for others a nice bit of extra bass does the trick (try sitting a lass on a bass amp whilst you play a low-C on a bass guitar ;) ).

Also the price differences. A Ferrari is 10-20 times the price of an entry-level supermini. But with stereos the price-range is from about £50 to £50K, sometimes more.

I wasn't suggesting no difference in systems as there definitely is a noticeable difference, what i was saying is that having got the best sounding system then decent sized copper cable versus the £8000 stuff will be i'd say impossible for the human ear to tell the difference taking that installation is done properly.
