Just wondering if the BS7671 regs say anything about earthing a metal back box containing a CAT 5e socket fed by UTP cable?

I am putting one in a room what will be about 100mm above a normal double socket.

I know CAT 5e is ELV, I have never earthed CAT 5e back boxes before just like I have never seen a TV Arial or telephone back box earthed. Just I wondered if it may be required for lighting protection or because of near by main LV cables, etc...

They cannot be exposed-conductive-parts without LV(240V) connections nor likely to be extraneous-conductive-parts.

Do you mean lightning? I don't think it would help.

or because of near by main LV cables, etc...
Not just because they are nearby.
