Eating in the 50s

Not the 50's nut the late 60's - full fat milk hand whisked with nesquick to make milkshake. Oh happy days.

Can relate also.

Sell-by dates? We just kept it until it was inedible then threw it away. Nowadays, the moment the date comes by, it's into the bin....

Shocking.

My aunty Maud (don't get names like that any more)
Yes, there are some quite interesting and, I think, attractive names that you never hear these days.
One of my favourites is Fanny.

There's a place called Saltaire near to where I was born and brought up; a village built for his workers by a mill owner called Titus (another interesting name) Salt. For some reason, he named many of his streets after his female mill workers.
One rejoices in the title of Fanny Street*! It's still there.

(*Titus Salt was a Quaker who would not allow alcohol to be sold in his village. I sometimes wonder whether he permitted certain other activities for the well being of his male workers!)

Well, I went to a Quaker Boarding School and Willy and the Hand Jive was not banned.....!o_O

British was atrocious until quite recently. In the 70's it was often disgusting. I used to throw up at school during mealtimes, as did some others. Catering was by Porton Down. They sent us stuff that was too toxic for their labs to handle. Parmesan came in a small cardboard shaker. I was envious of an Asian friend who had a nice packed lunch, in an indian tiffen tin.

I couldn't stomach school dinners.
I used to sell my dinner ticket for 10 1/2d, or 11d if I was lucky, and bought fish and chips.

There's no doubt that Asian food is healthier. Proper Asian food, not the takeaways. I spent two weeks in India and had curry every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner and actually lost weight which is not bad for a holiday. :D

And no, I didn't have the 'trots'.

Just because your school had shoite fayre, doesn't mean every school did.
In the same way that you argue that, just because a few extremists do something bad, doesn't make most Muslims bad. ;)

Were they the green, one-shilling tickets, by chance?
They were certainly one-shilling, but I seem to remember they were yellow and came in strips (of five?).
Mind you, this was over in God's County. Perhaps different councils had different tickets.

I have to say that our school dinners were great. Our school moved to a brand new building and the food changed too. It changed from the usual gruel to Pizzas, cheeseburgers, chips, toffee pudding. Ok, ok, I know it wasn't healthy but as kids we loved it
