Ebus and boiler modulation

Getting Home Assistant to manage this is on the todo list. All the pieces are there, just need the time...
I actually have the eBus adapter shield (https://adapter.ebusd.eu/v5/index.en.html) I bought a while back as I was considering doing some read-only monitoring at a minimum on my Vaillant boiler but:
1) There's no way it's being touched at all in the depths of winter
2) I have no other existing eBus controls (the current thermostat is a bog standard on-off device) which means for it to be connected the boiler it would have to be opened up to make the connection which would/should involve a Gas Safe engineer rather than me doing it.
