You probably wouldnt have had a filling loop prior to the new boiler being fitted. The old system would have been fed from the small tank in the loft. As the new system is sealed the water is supplied via the filling loop. It seems strange to put it in the airing cupboard, probably because this was easier (and cheaper) for the installer. I would have said it should be under the boiler, so you can fill the system whilst watching the pressure gauge on the boiler, thus preventing you over pressurising the system.
 
I often put the filling loop in the airing cupboard as usually you have cold mains there, wheras you probably won't at the system boiler.

I always fit an extra pressure gauge though, next to the filling loop, so the customer can see how far to fill.

yes I find myself running up and down the stairs a few times when I need to top up the pressure. I'm still waiting for engineer to come round :cry:
