Dingbat - what happened was the brick pushed back slightly (1") on one end, the mortar had gone powdery and the brick just moved. I did fill this in stages with filler as far back in the hole as I could get it so hopefully it wont be a problem.
As far as reasonable tradesmen goes - they are actually a reputable local company. I think the problem was he was in a rush that day and was here till 8 o clock doing the wiring cos he turned up late. Lesson learnt I wont use them again.
I have now decided to extend my tiling to cover the filling job I have done! I will just remove the plug fronts, tile round and re fit.
