electric windows...........great but don't need a computer to run them, central locking again don't need a computer.

That is not correct, they are controlled by the BCM amongst other modules.

As for the claims that fuel consumption hasn't been improved, (not by yourself) well that's patently not true.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they made a car that still had a carb and you put your key in the lock to get in..............yes you would lose 10mpg but you wouldn't be paying thousands for new electronics over the years!!

Not really, as you would get 0 MPG as it wouldn't be road legal.

An electric window only needs to be operated by a switch............a starter motor don't need a computer, everyone is obsessed with ramming a chip up the rear end of everything that will stand still for long enough.

A BCM............jeez, never heard of that, is it the same as a BSI?

Setting the dwell angle on a Lucas distributor with a knackered shaft bush (even from new), trying to set the dynamic timing with a strobe, the marks jumping around all over the place because of the slack springs holding the dizzy bob weights

Not true, it is a legal requirement that they can sense obstructions and retract if necessary. BCM is a body control module. There are dozens of such control modules in modern cars, many of which are legally required.

Yes, it would be wonderful if we could have the simplicity of an old car, and the safety, efficiency and environmental performance of a new one, wouldn't it? Unfortunately, real life ain't like that! Sure, we could do away with all the cats and lambda sensors and smart-arsed modern emissions control technology, but the price you will pay, is air quality like Delhi, Beijing or Mexico City.

The build quality of the components give them a bad reputation.
Better quality, and a bigger delay before going to market would help build more confidence, but do they really care?

Had an old engine that could not keep the distributor points set and if they were set would get damp sitting in the shed. An old Lucas electronic distributor sitting on an old Merto, so decided to fit it to the old engine. It now sparks far to many times per revolution (donor was a 4 cylinder) but the spark at the plug would do you good and starts in the wet or dry weather.
So technology really does work ..............

I am well pleased with the auto lights and wipers in our Gen9 Honda i-dtec, cruise and speed limiter, built in garmin sat nav, reverse camera and sensors front and rear and rear side, speed limit sign recognition camera, self zeroing (on fuel up) trip meters cum fuel consumption.
2 yrs old and no problems with the DPF - not aware of it at all at this stage.
Quite useful being zero road tax.
