it happened to me. Checking my spam email occasionally i found i was getting spam from myself! very annoying as it was a business email address which i was loath to relinquish. It lasted about a year and gradually tapered off and I havent had any for about six months now. Probably caused by carelessly using my email address.
I now use a throw away email address when i email or make a posting. I make no attempt to conceal it and the annoying thing is its never been highjacked!!

In answer to David-IkonIT there is a program called Neotrace, this does various IP tracking fascilities. I m not sure if this could do what you need it to but thought I would put in my penneth worth, there is both free versions and trail versions of the pro I think maybe worth a go.

hey, sounds like there is some hope.

I do run the ad software which is essential.

However as this problem has only got worse and worse over time even though I've been forwarding to a dump it has only got steadily worse.

it seems funny how they pick up on a certain email address. I'm sure my domain register sent it out to start with and that started it all.

I've had a similar problem with another free email address so it's not an odd one out.

However I do use others which are fine, best free one is britishlibrary.net which has a good profile. Makes me look very educated!

Try this:

Go to www.abuse.net. Follow the instructions to register, then follow the instructions, then report a sample of the spam messages that you're seeing. If you can find a sympathetic recipient of the spoofed messages then ask them to forward you a copy "with full headers".

It is such a problem that I do feel the best thing to do may be to not only give up the email address but the whole domain as soon it may be blocked or put on some 'nasties' listing as the level of bogus emails is out of control!

You're being a bit paranoid, but understandably so. In general, people are aware spam comes from spoofed addresses. I'm not sure what kind of nasties list you imagine exists out there, but if any blocking happens it will be not your domain but for the IP address from whence the spam came.

I've just set it up to forward 'dump' all emails (again) as it is the best temporary action I can take but having monitored it for over two months I have found it to be a lost case. It will be only a matter of time before someone is bound to use it to spread one of their nasty bugs or really get on someone's (corporate) tit!

The best action is to use a spamfilter. I can recommend the Norton Anti-Spam package, if you want to pay, and SpamPal if you don't.

This sort of rings a bell from looking at <Properties> < details> <Message Source> of some strange spam offered addresses recieved in such as Outlook Express .... very simply obscured URL...
BTW In OE the properties etc (above) method allows viewing the email without opening it.
