No they didn't.Started off in Japan
I never knew that Apple was a Japanese company. That's probably why Apple started including them.
Not smilies?I still call them emoticons.
Why??When did they become "emojis" anyway, and why? How?
2011 on Apple stuff
Google hits when searching for:
smilies - 115M
emoticons - 25.4M
emojis - 11M
Although widely (mis)used to refer to emoticons in general, dictionary definitions generally give the seemingly common sense definition of the word "smiley" as being a type/subset (albeit the most commonly used type) of emoticon - not surprisingly relating to those emoticons which indicate smiling!! It is really a bit odd to describe things like as "smilies"!Not smilies?I still call them emoticons.

BAS - you asked the question.
AFAIK, emojis originated in Japan and became popular. Apple added them to attract Japanese customers.
Popularity in Japan prompted Apple to add them. Nothing to do with Apple's heritage.
They subsequently gained popularity further afield.
Do you know differently?

Precisely. Or 'emojis' - it's just an evolutionary expansion. Those are nice smileys (or emoticons if you like)
My point is that they did not start off in Japan. What's your point?
:-)
Smilies became emoticions became emojis. Before replying, bear in mind you asked specifically about 'emojis'
