Anyone else ever had one of these go bang before? I just switched on the light from the top of an otherwise unlit staircase to go down, got halfway down and there was an almighty bang and the lighting circuit tripped - thankfully as a commercial premises there was an emergengy light fitting.
Switched the MCB back on and the only thing that wasn't working was the CFL at the bottom. I've not had a CFL go pop like this before - has anyone else or am I just unlucky?

Yeah, I've had quite a few. Two memorable visits where the CFL that kept blowing the fuse. It had failed, but shorted out internally so was tripping the MCB everytime that set of fittings was energised.

The other was a visit where the hall lights had started flickering. On examination, we found two standard dimmers controlling two CFL's!

As the customer was trying to demonstrate the fault (PLEASE DON'T TURN IT ON!!) one of the CFL's exploded good and proper. Luckily for us, the fitting enclosed the debris, but boy, what a bang!
