Talk of half the cashpoints will be charging for use by next year makes me think that now the banks have no excuses why you should have an account with them anymore and so i think a revival of the Trucker's act is long overdue and you should have the right to demand your wages in cash again and S*d the banks I for one am sick of being ripped off all the time by these moneygrabbing institutions that do nothing to my advantage.
If the worry of Wage robberies rears it's ugly head again then let's get a system of electronic money up and running everywhere without incurring any charges otherwise that is an infringement of your right to get your wages intact, am i alone in thinking that banks have ripped us off for too long now simply because we don't have a choice these days but to have an account?

Banks are gradually becoming mandatory. It's the only way big brother can keep an eye on your financial activities. There are situations where hard cash is no longer acceptable. for example Purchase of property or payment of Solicitors. Whereas, in the past, it would be inconvenient to pay these type of things with hard cash. Now it is outright illegal! (well so my solicitor tells me).

The excuse is anti terrorism blah blah. It's all part of the drive towards a Police State, at our expense.

I think it has a lot to do with tax evasion also.

They say it is Anti-Money Laundering. I suppose that could be related to funding terrorism.

I'm not too bothered, just so long as cashpoints remain free. Remember it USED to cost to take cash out of another bank's ATMs. Perhaps they will try charging again, then realise they have to pay far more on the salaries of counter staff as people refuse to pay £2 to take out £10. Those who don't increase the number of counter staff will lose customers to banks who DO take in more tellers. What good is a bank where you can't get your money out? Hmmm... maybe this is an attempt to curb the debt culture, as people won't be able to spend anything

Personally, I seldom carry cash. In the last 6 years I have never carried more than £10-20 with me apart from on an occasional big night out. Restaurants and chain pubs take Switch, all the shops I use take Switch. It is rare that I need cash. But as has been said, we should all have the right to get all of our money, in cash, without charge.

I would say definately both the banks and the Gov are in league with each other here. The banks are taking full of advantage of their monopoly, to the point that some would suggest they operate a cartel.

Given that we have been in the EU for years now it makes you wonder why banking/insurance etc, is still largely British owned, sounds like a bit of a cosy arrangement to me. Probably you stay out of my area and I will yours? You scratch my back?

The Gov on the other hand can more easily keep tabs on whats going on. Then they have the added bonus that they hit the banks for capital gains and corporation tax too. They probably get around half the profit.

I am not sure but did the Gov also hit the banks with windfall taxes once or twice? like they did with the utilities.

as far as im aware the truck act has never been repealed and certain workers can still legally demand to be paid in cash

Free non-branch based ATMs could soon disappear, Lawrence Baxter, senior policy officer at Which, told MPs.

Link has however denied this claim.

Mr Baxter said that banks such as Halifax and Abbey have sold ATMs located in non-branch locations to the fee-charging providers.

Is it similar to call centres ? Inasmuch as the Banks are subbing the ATM provision ?
