Hi all,
My EON supplied IHD has malfunctioned and seems not to be able to connect to the wifi. The box boots-up but stalls straight away with the wifi icon flashing and the message "waiting for data". It will then re-boot after about a minute and try again but never gets any further.

My other half has an EDF supplied IHD that she doesn't use. Could I use this at my place or would it not be compatible? They are both about 2 -3 years old so not the first generation.

Thanks

They have to be paired with the meter, so will not "just work". You could try asking your energy provider but this is one of those things that sounds sensible and is technically possible, but they will probably just fob you off because they don't have a procedure for it.

EoN say that is a known issue (potentially) and will get a fix in the fullness of time (possibly)... See https://www.eonnext.com/help/ihd#4WVxJ2gDw80dea0kVwEHW9

NB they connect via the Home Area Network (Zigbee) rather than your home WiFi network to the smart meter Comms Hub.

Your IHD fault may be different, of course. Speak to EoN about it and, if needed, a replacement?

Out of warranty they suggest the Chameleon iVie Bud (scroll to bottom of the EoN page I have linked above). That does allow a few extra features by additionally connecting to the interweb over your home wifi, I believe.

But apps like Bright and Hugo also can (after you give authorisation) access your smart meter 30 minute data, too. Not real time, of course, so may not suit your needs and use.

There are other IHD replacements that can be bought, Hildebrand is a make IIRC that can be remotely connected to your smart meter HAN with the right authorisation processes.

Thanks for your replies guys. Didn't know this was a possible known fault. I'll work through the Eon troubleshooter to see if I can narrow down the fault.
Won't be home for a couple of days though but will report back.

Dont know the current status but certainly EDF only supplied one IHD. Any replacement would have to be paid for. Appreciate tgat your supplier is Eon and if it ain't working its down to them to sort it.

I had heard this but according to the .gov website they should supply you with another free of charge.
Only certain 'vulnerable' customers or those with PAYG meters as I read it... and even then it is a voluntary thing for the suppliers.

My EON IHD is in a drawer somewhere. Not a lot of use really.

My BG one the same, connected, but in real terms normal 1.67kW export on IHM.jpg battery run out Monitor import.jpg but since this only happens around 9 pm, most of the day it shows nothing.

But I have 1735738396699.png so there is no need for the IHD, If I did not have solar panels, and the software which goes with them, I would be looking at the IHD, specially since meter not in the main house. As to reading meter, 1735738742810.png I have tried to wade through the readings, I assume this is what I am looking for 1735738878845.png but getting it to show is a pain, I used the app on the phone, but that is normally a day or so in arrears. Although it has now changed,1735739322579.png it now shows peak and off-peak used, as to why 5 days missing, not a clue.

The disappointing thing about my IHD [looks like yours ericmark] is that the lowest it will show is 0W, ie it cannot meaningfully represent export, and this is for a device made in 2024!

Smart meters are the biggest Government scam of the decade. They 'sell' it to consumers that we can keep an eye on energy usage and be more conscientious but in reality it is just another means of gathering data and what's worse, of being able to control us.
As shown by the 'voluntary' provision of replacing IHD units. These should be free, always and be part of the supply package. Otherwise it's of no use to the customer at all and ONLY the supplier. :(

It's a direct result, of the green energy generation. Green energy is only available when the wind blows, and/or the sun shines, it cannot so easily be stored. As a result, the energy price has to vary, to encourage/discourage usage, and the only way to do that, is with Smart Meters. Nowt wrong with SM's, apart from the way the government organised the rollout and the spec..

Smart meters were introduced to help the EU meet carbon emission targets agreed at one of the talking shops. At the time the UK were members of the EU so had to comply. Govt dictated the roll out who by, timetable ,etc and yes I know its not been met.

Update!!

Following the advice on the link that Rodders53 posted, I moved my IHD next to the electric meter and restarted it. A minute later it was all working again. Perfect!!!
About an hour later, following yet another short power outage ( regular round these parts and the cause of the initial loss of connection ), it lost connection again. Repeated the process and it fixed it once more.
Hopefully problem solved.

Thanks for all your replies, particularly Rodders53.

Glad you have found how to fix it.

Regular power cuts happen here, too... it would be a pain going outside to the meter cupboard to restore connection.
Mebbe that's another reason I don't bother with the IHD myself.
