Ethernet Cable

Hi,
I hope this post is in the correct place.
I am thinking of just running an Ethernet cable from the back of my router hub, - it is located near an old TV aerial hole in the wall so I was going to use that then run the outdoor cable along the house wall to the out building. The out building it single brick so not too much of an issue to drill a hole. Once inside the outbuilding can I buy a gang plate that will allow me to plug the outdoor cable into the back of it so I don't have to cut the cable?

Any advise will be welcome. Distance is approx. 20 - 30M

If you mean that you want to use a pre-made ethernet cable, you can do whatever you want. Just wrap some tape over the plug/jack to prevent damage. You could just caulk/silicone the entry hole and then hide the hole with a brush pile plate.

Yes, that is pretty much what I was thinking of. I didn't know there was a plate like that. My original thought was a jack socket on the back to jack socket on the front. But the brush pile plate looks a better solution. Do you know if I will experience much drop in speed? I will use CAT6 cable.

Bearing in mind how far your internet signal has already travelled just to get to you a short extra length of cable will make no difference to your speed. And might in fact improve things if you have been using WiFi before.

Yes, see eBay item number 193897840498 for example..

..but I wouldn't be scared of buying a regular Ethernet plate, one with punch down connectors; you don't specifically need a punch down tool to connect them up (not that they're expensive at all tenner) - if you're careful and have good eyesight you can use the blunt side of a Stanley knife blade to press the wires in (have the narrower sharp tip of the blade between the punch connector fingers and the thicker blunt part of the blade to the outside, pressing the wire down

Either form of connector is going to work and not impact the speed. Personally I wouldn't use a brush plate in this scenario; CATx cables are easy to damage and I feel it's better to protect the end of a long/buried run behind a socket (from which a short, easily replaceable patch cable emanates), but I can understand why others would use a brush plate
