excel consumer units Any good?

The Excel kit came with a single copper line bus. If you need a mix of RCD-protected/unprotected circuits you have to cut this. There was nothing in the kit that said anything about this.
You don't get it, do you.

There didn't need to be anything about that - fitting a CU is not like changing a plug, and anybody who was truly competent to do it would have known that he had to cut it.

The original Question was whether Excel units were OK and I posted my opinion.
Valueless.

The man from Southern Electric tested my wiring and it passed the insulation test.
He did a full EICR did he?

Has he come back to carry out all the live tests following your CU replacement?

Have you thought about what you'll do when you sell the house and you get asked if you've done any work which needed Building Regulations approval?

As supplied, this unit was not fit for purpose because it did not contain important information. That's my warning to would be buyers.
Not fit for purpose for t**ts who are so ignorant that they should not contemplate replacing a CU, and so stupid that they go ahead anyway, you mean.

Could it be that they expected you to know what you were doing?

Nah. People shouldn't have to know things. Just plug it in and go.

I am pleased you have noted my and others comments and hopefully it will bring you to becoming more aware of the dangers, when knowledge, experience and ability is lacking.
My comments were not made to drive you away from forum use, only to make you a little more aware. Unfortunately leaving is not the answer, as I personally believe your continued use of this forum and other forum like it, would be beneficial to you, your family, pets, neighbours and property.

That is a pity because you obviously had enough basic knowledge to work out that ( as supplied ) the CU was not suitable for YOUR installation. You lacked the experience (and knowledge gained from experience) of having had to adjust the bus bar lengths to suit YOUR particular installation.

Image how many varients of each CU there would be if they were only sold with bus bars pre--cut at manufacture to the lengths required.

This forum is a source of that knowledge.

No he didn't:

I only got round to fitting this recently and discovered that the RCD tripped for every circuit I fitted.

He didn't have the basic knowledge to work out that (as supplied) the CU was not suitable for any installation where an RCD was to be used.

No - he lacked the knowledge that there was such a thing as having to adjust them:

It is wired up incorrectly and both my requests for help on this to the sellers help on their website have got no response.

This model must be the type most suitable for most old houses yet it can't protect properly.
