I'm replacing an external security light but need to run a short conduit to the new position for the light. The new light has a surface mount so the conduit has no point on entry from the side. Is the only way to wire this by mounting it on the front of a similar sized junction box? It will mean drilling a hole in the box cover and sealing it. Seems a bodge and might not be as watertight.

Why not run the cable/conduit to an outside joint box butting up to the light then chase out a small piece of cement/mortar so the cable can run that way? Repointing if necessary

You could add a few washers or offcut of poly pipe to space the light off the wall enough to use the rear entry point. Then longer fixing screws .
