Extractor fan wiring

Thanks and all and especially @pete01. As suggested. I removed the live from the fan side and everything now works correctly.
Are we saying the live on the feed side is required or is that superflous here too? I don't plan to change it now as it is working! Just interested to understand.
I thought the operation was, light and fan when switched on, when switched off, light goes out but the fan runs on for a time. But doesn't it come with instructions about wiring?

He hasn't got a timer fan.
 
If I stayed in an hotel where it worked like that I'd give the place a black mark, thought they didn't know how to wire it properly, but maybe sometimes there was no choice! ;)
Haha yes in the case of this thread a timer fan would of been the better choice as the wiring was there for it.
