fascia board question

hi when your using a 18 mm facsia board what size of timber do you use to fit the lip part of the facsia? hope you know what i mean.as i understand this timber goes all the way found and you nail the facsia to it

18mm is replacement fascia and does not go on top of any wood, it is fixed usually with 65mm polytops straight into the rafter feet, the 9mm coverboard is what you would fit over the top of existing wood usually 6 or 8 by 1" only if sound but is not good practice.
 
Perhaps you might consider stainless screws and plastic fold over screw caps. Slower than the nails but a doddle to remove and reposition if you don't get it right first time. (from a DIYer not roofer)

You only drive the polytops home once its all aligned, and the protective film removed. ;)
