change the fused spur for a single socket outlet and plug in a light..

stay up till 4am within sight of the light.. if it comes on then the heaters stuffed..
if it doesn't then the curcuit is stuffed..

Place a very small piece of chocolate on the lamp.

When you wake up at a sensible time look at the chocolate. If melted then the heater is not working, eat the rest of the chocolate as consolation.

must admit i never thought of that..

alternatively, a coffee maker and if it's working you'll have a nice jug of coffee waitin when you wake up..
