Would it be such a great loss if they did pull out?

Ferrari?

Sports car icon.

Formula 1 the ultimate in motor racing.

Yeah lets replace them with a Corvette.

Money or the shortage of it worldwide, is making headlines at the moment. But when things improve financially and an unlimited supply of petrol is discovered then Ferrari will always have a place in the ultimate motor racing spectacle.

Personally i have little time for F1. Slowly stopped watching it once the James hunt era was over. Mansell and Hill kept a modest interest going but it is less exciting now then ever. It is good that Brits do well though.

Must be a great life being a successful F1 driver..... :p

Try being a passenger in one (I was in a 2 seater version) let alone drive it. I Spent most corners holding my head up.

Whilst they are rewared hugely, I personally would prefer not to have my wheels less than 2 inches from my competitors at over 180 mph... even for 4 mill a year. :)

I find the driving superb, the bravery honerable and the attitude fantastic (amongst most F1 drivers).

I agree races can be boring, but the driving..... :D

I would imagine the first corner would be petrifying and just get worse from there. The whole grip, downforce, accell, de-cell would be mind blowing.

Acceleration was ok, as was breaking, (ok meaning I didnt have to hold the head)... threw up in the helmet though. Corners were midly tough as in a few you had to grip your head and I passed out for a couple of seconds when the 'G' was a bit much.

Back in the 70's, F1 cars never performed this amount of power.

Not entirely sure about their current involvement/role in Formula 1; I was an avid follower some years ago but, to be honest, I don’t think it would make much difference to either the racing or the desirability of their cars if they pulled out. I will admit I’m biased because, for me, Ferrari has always made simply the best & most desirable cars in the universe. Those friends & neighbors discussions we all have about “what you would do if you won the lotto”, my answer is always that the first you would know about it would be that a very red Ferrari (but not necessarily new one!) would appear on my drive; I can still dream!

Some years ago I was tendering a very large contract for my employer & one of the strong contenders was a company based in Modena. We had several, very enjoyable visits to Italy “in discussions” & I made it very clear that in the event they got the contract, part of the deal would be extensive visits & track days at Ferrari, Lamborghini & Maserati, all based within spitting distance so I was told. It was probably one of the biggest disappointments of my entire career that they just didn’t do enough to win the contract; but then I was always as straight as they come!

PS Have been on a track day but not racers; still awsome though!

Not a great lover of this sport? but it seems to me that they are saying is if we can't win then we won't play so there.Would it be such a great loss if they did pull out?

No what they are saying is that to comply they (and several other teams) would need to sack 80% of their present staffing level in order to meet the budget. If they agree not too then they can keep their 40m+ budget but penalities are imposed. just one of which has been estimated at 1 1/2 seconds per lap.

Thus they cannot win by reducing their budget to the 40m max nor could they win by quadrupling their already massive spend.
It's a no win for them so they see little point.

F1 would be massively reduced if they did pull out so this has a way to run....

There are already 4 new teams lined up for next year, one of them an american team called USF1.

Ferrari are not bigger than the sport and as far as I am concerned I will be unconcerned at their exit. It won't happen though this is just the early positions of the bartering process to get what each F1 team wants.

Toyota have also threatened to leave - they are considering spending their 200 million a year on the World Rally Championships.

Red Bull won't sign up to a capping system. Blah Blah Blah

It's always the same each year - just out in the open now.

Richard hammond after saying "how hard can it be", in reference to driving an F1 car, was then given the chance.

He spent one minute travelling the first 40 feet..........
And made a mess of his further attempts.
For all his car driving exploits, he could not handle it.

One thing that they revealed, was that the engines are made to such fine tolerances, that they are effectively seized when cold.
And need to have hot water pumped through them before being fired up...........

That doesn’t make any sense  ; operating clearances decrease as the engine heats up, hence the reason why engines seize if you thrash them to hell & back or the cooling system packs up!

No, think about it.
Some very large bearings have their housings heated up to enable the bearing to slide in.
Same principle as heating the surrounding engine block, around the pistons.

Cooling systems prevent over heating.

If you doubt it, please ring Top Gear........ :)
