Almost every remake ive ever seen wasnt a patch on the orginal.
the classic quintessential 1960's film Barbarella, was just remade by Robert Rodriguez, result - garbage.
Fahrenheit 451 (2009) dir. Frank Darabont , a remake of Fahrenheit 451 (1966) dir. François Truffaut, result - garbage
I Died A Thousand Times (1955) dir. Stuart Heisler, a remake of High Sierra (1941) dir. Raoul Walsh. I nearly choked with laughter at it.
Some films just get flogged to death- Rider Haggard wrote a book entitled The King Solomons Mines, theres been four film versions of it - 1937, 1950, 1985 and 2009. I still like the 1937 version best. similarly, Oliver Twist has been flogged to death with versions in 1922, 1933, 1948, 1968, 1982, 1997, 2004 and 2005. I hope to god they let it lie in peace now.....
Having said that, theres two versions of The Maltese Falcon, 1941 and 1931, i like them both.
Of course, the film buffs out there will already know that Never say never again is a remake of Thunderball, based on the Ian Fleming novel. I still prefer the original.
As for the remakes of Get Carter and The Italian Job there not worth mentioning, ive seen better films on dirty toilet pans.
Finally, Daphne Du Maurier wrote a book Rebecca, which was filmed twice, in 1941 and 1997. The latter versions sucked donkey balls imho. In my fickle youth, whilst at Uni, i saw it performed as a play in Manchester with an entirely forgettable 'all star' cast. At the end the cast all took a bow at the stage front, then the author, then an old lady, hobbled on and the spotlight swung on her. There was a silence, and some wag in the crowd shouted out "Bloody hell, its Rebecca"
That ruined it for me forever..............
