Hi all , I am currently trying to convert our front bedroom into a bathroom upstairs. It’s a semi detached property with side path to the back of the property which is where the first man hole is , this leads to the second man hole at the entrance of the property. Based on the location of the 2 man holes I can tell the clay soil pipe is going under the side path. The distance between the 2 manholes is around 25 meters. Is there an easy way to know how deep the clay pipe is before digging ?

Lift up the manholes covers and measure the depth between the 2 and work out the depth over the lenght.

Measure the depth down to the pipe, from the surface at the manhole. Use a water level to determine the difference in the heights of each surface at the manhole. Make an assumption that the slope between the two will be an even slope - using the water level, you should be able to determine approximately how deep is should be, at any point along the route.
Ensure this is indeed a Foul sewer too before making any connection!

Some authorities have separate rain water to foul sewers and the penalties can be quite severe for misusing the wrong one.
Rain water goes straight to streams and rivers with minimal if any treatment, foul sewers need a major amount of treatment.

I have a small problem though. The distance between the 2 manholes is around 20 meters however it is not that straight forward as the 2nd man hole is at the bottom of a set of steps which are around 2 meters lower than the top of the steps. So I am not sure whether the clay pipe comes at a low angle all the way to the top of stairs and then drop down at the angle of steps or follow a consistent angle from the first manhole which would mean the dig will be deeper.
Based on that I am looking into another option instead of digging to find the clay pipe as per the photo here.
Would it be possible to follow this route shown in red and chase the toilet pipe into the side of the steps ?

Get any indy to cctv the run. They'll be able to tell you approx depth and course.

Council should be told if you plan on going ahead converting the room.

@HERTS P&D hear you had some fun in Brookmans Park the other day! 
@HERTS P&D we re-routed it all yesterday. Across the flat roof and down to the gully. Bypassed all the rotten cast iron. Was blocked to feck.
