I think that's the wrong way round. BS 5446 Part 1 relates to smoke detectors. (And you may want heat detectors in certain locations.) BS 5839 relates to system design and specification.

sounds like a standard domestic (3 floor) smoke detector install.

so you will have probably been asked for one detector to each landing and a heat detector in the kitchen.

if you fit that (or better get your sparks to fit them, as they will need to be signed off) that should satisfy building control.

but yes you can add additional devices to the radial circuit to go into each room if you want, but check with manufacturers as to how many you can put on the radial circuit.

or you could go the whole hog and put a panel downstairs and fit a full 5839 system to LD2 / 3 if you want !!!! but it will cost you a pretty penny tho!!!

I am alittle confused!

When orginally speaking to my architect, he told me I would need a detector in every room, Hallway etc.

I have been looking at a wired system and buy individual components to suite my needs.

A Panel with a backup battery system would set me back around 200£ with the detectors priced around 10 to 15£.


The question I have is I would have 3 floors, would I need 3 zones or would I need 1 zone alocated to 1 room?

I guess I need to really read up alittle more about it and then decide that I want to do.

I did some basic reading today and will be going for a 3 Zone system with 1 zone for each floor.

Ground Floor
1x Heat Sensor in Kitchen
1x Heat Sensor in Pantry
2x Smoke detectors in the lounge and dining room
1x smoke detector in the hallway.

First Floor
5x Smoke detector in Rooms and bathroom
1x Smoke detector in Hallway.

Second Floor
3x Smoke detectors in Rooms
1x Smoke detector in Hallway.

Smoke detectors in rooms will be installed closer to the door,
and the Hall ones will be located at the begining of the landing.

You need to read up more,

None in the bathroom.

30cm from doors and fittings if possible.

Smokes near kitchens are not too good.
Multi sensors are better in and halls.
Opticals in lounge and landings.
Ionisation in bedrooms.

Landings need to be near the higher points, as smoke rises.

The above is a brief description.

You still do not know what room has tripped.
Is this all interlinked or at a control panel?

sorry mate but you might have fitted your own burgalr alarm, but a life safety ssytem is TOTALLY dirrent kettle of fish SP203 BAFE approved ?
