A substance doesn't have to be volatile to be a good fuel.
diesel is a good fuel, but it is certainly not as volatile as petrol. I once heard that if you dropped a lit match into a tank of diesel, the diesel would simply drown the flame and extinguish it!

I can't believe an adult could be so stupid.

Doh, petrol + ignition......erm.......

Liquid oxygen - that's the stuff to use - gets the charcoal glowing really quickly...

I've never tried liquid oxygen, but blasting it with the airline does a good job of getting the coals glowing nice and hot.

No doubt someone (who's never tried it) will tell me that's a bad idea too.

I've not tried it, but I can see the potential for compressed air to blow hot cinders about the place...

havnt seen it in a while but you could get this squirty gel you covered the charcoal with and it started them a treat even in windy conditions.

When we had a charcoal bbq I had a length of copper pipe bent over and flattened a bit at one end and you directed this end at the coals while blowing down it. It worked pretty well.

yeah. lighting gel. we have 60 bottles of the stuff in the cellar at our shop. £180 worth. Have had it for the last 3 years. Someone care to relieve us of it? I'd love to see our shop go up in flames - plenty of fuel, would be spectacular! ;)
