we took rods on holiday with us and I had a go in the sea, off harbour walls.

I had a 'spinner' for ease but didnt catch a thing!!!

not sure if it was just bad luck, bad technique or what..

There were other locals who had caught fish.

Dont know if this is something where practice makes perfect, or if spinners arent as good as bait?

i would think smelly fishy bait is the answer.

when on hol's in florida, i would buy a bucket of live shrimp and thread 'em on to the hook.

the wriggling, flicking critters caught me loads of fish.

I used to fish quite a bit around the Norfolk & Suffolk coastline (from the beach). I gave up three years ago as the catches had definitely dwindled. Sometimes there wouldn't even be a catch for weeks.

dipping or trolling with feathers for pollock is best and you could catch the odd mackerel. yum! :D

sorry richard.. what is dripping and trolling?

because Im just a beginner, I think I may cheat a little and go back to trout farm... it helps boost moral if I catch something!!!!

'dipping' you let the line out til the lead hits the bottom, bring it up a few yards and dip the line up and down a few times then bring it up a few more yards and do it again keep doing that til it reaches the surface then start over again, Trolling is the same but moving ahead slowly a few knots.{trolling can only be done from a boat)
p.s women generally catch more fish than men. :D

I troll with the rowing boat off whitley bay and it works wonders for mackerel

hard to do both mind rowing and fishing

Thats what your teeth are for

We had an old seagull outboard once which any old seadogs here will know as either a reliable old workhorse or a piece of crap only fit for the murky brine!! anyways the seagull had an exposed flywheel on the top of it spinning at (anyone know?) fast! and we was trolling for pollock when suddenly the line got snagged to the flywheel which brought the hooks line and sinker up from davy jones locker very very fast, the lead shot off like a bullet near missing me whilst them nasty hooks was whizzing round threatening to embed themselves into human flesh, anyway, it all got tangled up and stalled the motor phew! that was a scary moment afloat.

I've been known to do a bit of trolling.

when you cast do you do it direct from behind or out to the side?

oh.. ha ha... do you live near the sea? or a river? I seem to remember you have difficulties with one of your arms..?
but if you can... try fishing... it is therapeutic, even when you dont catch anything.

I like fishing. And nothing fancy. In a boat or off the bank...line in the water, whether I catch something or not. I just dont make the time anymore.
And yes...broke my hand....all is fine now. :)
