Toffee you don't need to cast from a boat when using feathers. You just drop the line straight down (take the rachet off the reel) and your weight will take it down to the sea bed, then you wind it back up a bit and start dipping as Richard said. Generally easier from the sides of the boat as there is more space. We fished a lot in the summer and always seemed to have more luck dipping than trolling, and it's a lot more peaceful as you don't have the engine noise. Most people I saw fishing from the harbour wall used livebait.

Tried fishing by those methods but soon got bored of catching flies...not much sport there and they fall through the grill on the barbie.
