I must remember not to boil in a microwave any distilled water that I may have lying about.
Naturally you will remain sceptical but I can only say that what I understand to be this phenomenon in fact happened to me personally about a decade ago.

Very new mug, only ever washed by hand, one of those truncated cone shapes if that's relevant. Soft water area. Took it out of microwave after three minutes or so, looked like the innocent flower but suddenly boiled violently either when I put the spoon in or when I put it down on the counter. I wasn't conducting an experiment of any sort; I wasn't even aware of the possibility until it happened.

I've experienced it.

Water softened and filtered, not distilled.

The fact that one test used distilled water does not prove that it only works with distilled water.
