Loads try it, just read some of the posts on here, all sorts of people (from electrical engineers to car mechanics) think they are competant to work on gas, and they can get quite abusive when we (RGIs) wont give them advice.

I'm the sort that can spend hours doing something, but getting nowhere fast. It's like a super procrastination.
I know my limits in a too negative sense.

The mechanics etc theoretically have more chance than me but they need several things..

1) a steady mind
2) the right, safe tools
3) the necessary knowledge and hints/tips (in the know- knowledge)
4) sense
5) contingency plan and how to explain epic fails.

In short, why take a chance for a few £'s.
I mean FFS, they'll go out to eat and could spend £10 -£40 a head.....

I think really, the problem is when people look at the lump sum of money and not what the value they get for it.

It hurts to look at £2000 lump sum, instead of say £40 month for 6 years (inc interest)
Still it hurts more if they blow themselves up.
I am really surprised they do, maybe they have some sort of psychological disorder of grandeur, mania, something that gives a false delusional confidence.

Another way I look at it is, value related to size. I don't think some people can handle spending £10000 on a new car, but £2000 on a new boiler. Then again, 5 boilers would take up a lot of space lol.........

Still lets face it, an envelope and a stamp for £20, re: the solicitors comment arghhhhh.

Then, lets not forget the price of quality, niche market precision tools....and mission critical device costs etc.

You cannot imagine just how reluctant some people are to spend justa little on a new boiler.

I oncewent to a £4M house with a very old and inefficient boiler. I quoted him just £1400 inc. for a nice new condensing boiler.

On his forecourt he had about £60k of almost new cars.

But he passed on the new boiler even though he would have recovered the cost in 2-3 years from the increased efficiency.

He set up a small chain of DIY/hardware shops about 15 years ago.

he said the profit margin was good an he was not bothered by the B&Qs because they were on th edge of town while his shops were for people on foot.

As he had bought the freeholds he sold the shops leasehold when he wanted to retire so he could still receive the rentals as his pension.

Transam, thanks for your boiler suggestion. I'll have a look.

It's only a combination boiler currently, no condensing drains or anything like that.

WEll, just an update.

Finally, plumber was appointed for friday just gone, biasi specialist.

changed flow diverter valve (don't know if diaphragm was a problem or not.)

Changed gas valve
and some other stuff inc service etc.

Heating now works, job done.

I can't help wondering how long the remaining 10 year old moving parts will last lol.

The final price, which I won't mention was far more reasonable than expected, considering how much the parts would cost at retail to an end user, ie
Valve £150 ish
flow diverter £60 ish.

I think I can kick the electric fan heater away now as I'm sure gas is significantly cheaper per KW, regardless of actual KW price differences
