I'm having the bathroom redone in our old Victorian house. Previously there were some areas of wall which had tiles on, other areas were painted lining paper. We removed the tiles and removed any plaster beneath where it sounded poorly fixed when we tapped it. The main wall that was previously tiled now looks like this:

The wall which was previously painted lining paper looks like this (the paper is quite well adhered):

I have large travertine tiles (600x400) and Adesilex P9 adhesive (also grout and sealer of course). Can we fix the tiles directly to the walls and to the lining paper using the adhesive? Do we need to remove the lining paper first? Do we need to use a fix a backerboard to the walls and tile onto that?

Many thanks.

No, dont ever fix tile to paper, scrape off all paper and paste. Scarify any painted surface. Dont worry about finishing up with a rough looking surface - the powdered adhesive will take care of that: butter the backs of the tiles, & perhaps use an 1/2" round notch trowel.
No need to use backer board in non-wet areas.

FWIW: first fix and sink the box for the basin light before any tiling. Then fill the channel. Presuming Part-P comply?

Note your FFL on the walls before marking setting out lines or battens.

I see you've used backer board in the shower - thats good. Use BB's or S&C render over any wet wall.

There are a number of systems, now out, for eliminating lippage in large tile - but whether they are cost wise suitable for a DIY'er i dont know.
