For any guitar players

Any advice in what to look for in a teacher notb665? Any pertinent questions I should ask?

Not particular any questions, but watch out for those who are bitter about teaching as a second choice to being a rock star, and those teaching just to augment the income if they are gigging. Also watch out for those who play when they don't need to, i.e. you sit there waiting and they are doing something irrelevant/flash... for a long time.

Of course patience is good in any teacher.

Good luck.

You've got to decide what style you want to play.

There are basically 2 techniques:

Three fingered playing and four fingered playing.

It's really quite difficult to go from playing with three fingers and your thumb hooked over the fretboard to four fingered with your thumb behind the back of the neck.

Clapton plays with three, DiMeola plays with four.

But the main thing is that you have to be able to whistle/sing in tune. If you are tone deaf you'll need to find another hobby.

You've clearly never heard Manitas De Plata sing....

Cheers, I'll bear those pointers in mind. And thanks for the good luck.
Guitar came today - nice. Amp tomorrow. Wife will probably be upset non too long after I've got everything connected up and tuned in and demanding I use my headphones. ;)

Jimi Hendrix never did any guitar playing with his teeth.
Hmm.

Are we sure about that?

Notty, care to share a slice of me humble pie...I got bellyache already ;)

No humble pie for me, thanks. It is far more likely he was doing something else to get the type of attack on the notes, the type of tone and the sequence of notes he is playing. There are also clues in the editing of the video and the sound track.

I can do exactly the same thing by holding the guitar up to my mouth but not actually showing what I am doing with it, as he does!

I like it when you call me Notty, though.

Oh, well, you the Teach, Notty :D !
All the more for me then

Hey notb665,
I checked out your listing on that guitar tutoring site. Seems like you really know what you're doing. Shame I don't live near you or I'd be giving you a call for lessons.
Just gonna have a read through "guitar for dummies" before I go for lessons - just on the off-chance that it'd save some time.
Had my first go at tuning with the digi tuner last night - what a superb piece of kit for £15! I think I'm gonna like this.

Im glad you stopped the myth that Hendrix was the boy band guy of his time ...

You reckon? I don't think he was the sensation of the 60's ... Like it or lump it, the only true sensation in that decade were the scouse lads !
:D :D :D :D
