Last question guys gearbox oil? What type am i looking for driveshafts have gone :'(

An SAE 75/80 gearbox oil works well in the Fiesta...fully synthetic.
What's up now......CV joints gone the journey?

Nah the mechanic mate by me can move them in and out :S getting it replaced seems easier

Got me flummoxed a bit too......the driveshafts shouldn't move in and out of the gearbox, but they are free to move on their splines -although the movement will be minimal.
If there's a knocking noise when the car is driven on full lock, then it's a CV joint issue.
John :)

Is this the old Escort gearbox problem of output shaft bearings failing?

This is on no lock he could physically pull them out of the gear box i thought it was brakes at first then he checked it over was the drive shaft and welding needing doing in sils

The driveshafts usually lock into the differential using snap rings (a sort of circlip) but leaving them out does little harm.
The sill issue gives us some concern though.....maybe a pic or two would help?
John :)

Okay then and he just tapped around the base of the car lightly and it went straight through 2 of the sils because he is a neighbour hes welding it for free car doesnt look like its had much done in the 16 years its been around

iB5 boxes don't suffer the output bearing failures of the 80's boxes.

Agreed, this sounds like the clips are missing. If the *joint* can pull out the gearbox.

Personally if they don't knock when driven normally I'd leave them be.

If the gearbox is losing much oil there is a problem that needs fixing. However if the rust is serious it would seem the car isn't going to last much longer
