Were there any visible clues on the surface where this drain run actually was? such as manhole covers, gullies, soil pipes etc?
If not how did you expect the architect to trace the drain? Did you pay for a full drain survey with electronic tracing?
I would say this could be down to the piling contractor. It is not usually possible to identify all underground services before work starts so the piling contractor/groundworker should be on the look out for drains etc. and if they smash through a pipe flag it up for repair or re-routing the drain. We have already established the piling contractor is a bit of a numpty with his 2mm movement joint so there are probably numerous other cock ups with the piling and ground beams.
