There are no earth wires the black and red cables are under the upstairs floorboards there is no switch wire the wires on the lamp are brown and blue if i connect brown to red and blue to black the light stays on

If there is no switch wire then how did the switch turn the old lamp on and off ?

What sort of fuses have you got. Reason for asking is that maybe when you put all reads together and all blacks together you put live and neutral on the switch terminals and that blew the switch contacts away before the fuse could blow. If it was a dimmer switch then it will be dead.

If, as john 21 says, we are no more qualified than he, we'd better quit trying to help him.

He'll just have to put up with the light being on all the time (well, the old one was wired the same way, wasn't it? He should be used to it by now.)
