Hello

I have what could be a very simple and silly question but I was wondering if one of you lot could enlighten me.

I'm having a combi boiler installed in the loft space and because it's insulated it can get pretty cold up there so I've been advised to get a froststat, specifically they are fitting a Honeywell T4360.

Fair enough but I'm thinking there also needs to be a pipe thermostat otherwise the central heating will be on constantly during the winter months trying to keep the loft warm so I'm looking at a Honeywell L641B.

Are these 2 devices supposed to work in conjunction with each other? What I'm thinking will happen is the pipe stat will kick the boiler on if the water in the pipe starts to freeze over, which is fine but wouldn't the room stat ignore all that and kick in the boiler regardless, constantly? Or am I missing something obvious here?

Thanks

Peter

hi

most modern boilers have built in frost protection. as long as your pipes are lagged properly then you shouldnt need any frost stat.

Most boilers just circulate the water first whe the boiler goes below 5° so this protects the pipes as well ( to a degree ).

They fire up when the temperature goes below 3° in the boiler.

Its not perfect but it usually works.

Fitting an external frost stat will make it likely for the heating to come on during cold spells even if not demanded just because the temperature in the LOFT is below 5°. Because there is no rad in the loft then the loft will never warm up and so the boiler will stay on.

I think they are not thinking properly.

Ah so if the boiler is installed in a cold place but comes with built in frost protection (It's a Worcester-bosch greenstar 24i and it does) those frost thermostats are a waste of money?

Thanks
