Spoke to my dad today (Boss aswel) and he said that he used to just start a fire at the bottom of the stack Alan

Next time, run a hose from the hot tap outside the window to the stack and let hot water dribble down the OUTSIDE of the soil pipe for an hour or two. Cast iron being a good conductor of heat. This won't melt all the ice but will make a gap between the ice plug and the wall of the pipe, partially unblocking the pipe and allowing the rest of the defrosting to be done by a hot water hose left running INSIDE the WC pan.
