I think the boffins behind part P have missed an important opportunity..

Making it a Compulsory Requirement that all fuse boxes, are replaced with Consumer Units with suitable MCB's in them, to remove a great source of potential danger!

Well not really. Apart from the post quoted by BR, all of the other dodgy practices listed here (tinfoil in plugs, nails in plugs, wrong fuses in plugs, wires jammed into sockets) are nothing to do with the CU....

Where is my post gone? and BR why is it 'extreamly dangerous'? I agree that anybody showing a 7 year old how to do what you say is a nutter, but whats wrong with what i'm talking about? it is completely enclosed. And whats all this about me joking? forgive me if i'm wrong but it sounds to me that some of you 'big nobs' are sorry ye didn't think of it first.

your origonal post was deleted because it was considered to be too dangerous.

The problem with a forum is that if some one reads it they may assume that as it has been posted then it must be ok.

as for your comment forgive me if i'm wrong but it sounds to me that some of you 'big nobs' are sorry ye didn't think of it first you are forgiven, but it shows how ignorant you are. But yet you understand about the absence of plug with the 7 year old child?

I shall explain.

A fuse or mcb is designed to be "the weakest link" should a fault occur the "weakest link" will activate (trip or blow) by doing as you have suggested the "weakest link" now becomes the cable or what ever is connected to it.

so if a fault does occur the cable for example will get red hot and cause a fire.

take for example a hair dryer done as you suggested, fault occurs, dryer keeps getting hotter and hotter, sets fire to its surroundings, house fire, no more house all because you did as you suggested.

not got a hair dryer, what about the computer you are using, that can also cause a fire too.

do the sensible thing only change "like with like" not like with "something that just may fit and i have lots of it"

do you know how may people are killed each year in house fires, through electrical faults? if people did not do as you suggest, more would be alive today

may what you have done stay in your consious when your or your neighbours house catches fire.

It would be interesting to know what train of thought led to the actions described in the deleted post. Why???????????

On a serious tone limla, I think you should take into account what breezer has said, perhaps you could hire an electrician for an hour he will advise you on the entire installation and put right any problems which he comes across. In my house it is a very rare occurrence for a fuse to blow on any circuit. I can very much associate with what breezer has said as I am a member of our local fire service. Although we have rarely come across serious fires caused by faulty wiring or bridged protective devices, they are a real danger. Every year we handle approximately 100 calls and as we were working out recently almost 25% of these have fatal or at least very serious results. (a shocking percentage). Picture this scenario, you (as a fireman) are at a house fire, on arrival you become aware that 2 children are trapped in an upstairs (attic) bedroom. As you enter the building you see the children’s mother standing in the front driveway, you know there is no way you can reach the children in time. Due to the intence heat you are forced to retreat. How do you think this feels? standing outside the building helpless, knowing that both children are dead. This is not taken from some horror film, it is an actual account of what happened to me almost a year ago.

Make you think?

Many years ago my lecturer at college likened abusing the protective device with smoking while filling up your car.........

I'm sure Scoby won't be surprised to hear that I've seen French pump attendants with Gauloises in mouth, with at least an inch of ash hanging off the end....

Yeah, me too! But it was diesel, so no immediate danger.

In fact, I've seen people extinguish cigs in diesel!!!!
