Is there a reason why there were gaps left between where the gutter pipe and the wall are (I have messily filled 3 of them)? Is it to ventilate the wall inside or because someone was lazy to the remove the pipe? Building is over 80 years old.
Maybe downpipe wasn't removed.
Maybe it was put back before the repointing was completed.
Maybe they pulled a fast one as can't be seen behind pipe so left it.
OP,
Dont even bother about "Gaps in the pointing". The pointing is a sand & cement mix thats been merely smeared on to the previous pointing - its already cracking and failing.
The chase needs to be 25mm deep with a 3:1 mix of sand and NH lime mortar used for any new pointing.
