Also the anti-sag tensioner for the gate.

Also the anti-sag tensioner for the gate.

I may have mis-read the various pieces of advice....

Adding another tensioner bar to the gate would be very pricey (see new sketch), more like £150+. Can I achieve the same result using wire rope. I already have a load of 3mm stainless wire plus all the fittings (though mabe the eyes aren't up to it)

Is this sufficiently strong to achieve the same result but at zero extra cost?

I don't know the strength of wire rope, but it is probably enough. For greater confidence you could run it in a loop so you have two strands sharing the weight. It might be useful to put a thimble in the ends so there is not a sharp bend over the hooks. See "eyelet"

BZP studding is quite cheap, it is used to support suspended ceilings and electrical ducts, I have it in (I think) three metre lengths. You have to get it from a wholesaler as it is obviously too big to post. You can get female screw eyenuts and hooks for the ends.

I don't think it needs the cables, looks sturdy enough, plus you can always add them later

I think that I'll go for the no-cost cable support version. I'll post a pic when done

Thanks to all for the assists

The replies above are good. One thing I would add. Remember adjustable hook and band hinges and install a 10mm gap all around. This means that if the gate drops, you can adjust the hinges.

Hi All,

Update:

Gate superstructure is hung and solid. I have a slight issue that I could do with a sense-check. (Old lap is on temporarily)

The hinges that I have bought have a small semi-circle on the inside of the hinge that actually stops the gate opening as much as I would like. Would it compromise the strength of the hinge if I were to angle-grind it off?

Strange. Looks like someone failed to spot a fettling error on the casting in Q/C.
