Its probably efflouresense, if it is it will weather away. It could also be cementy stains from spilt bedding mix that was brushed off. You should be able to deal with them after pointing.

The terram 1000 will be suitable as a weedblock fabric.

So should we just leave the stains until we've pointed? Or rub down frequently with a sponge and a lot of water?

Re the weeds, would we be better using the terram 1000 over plain old bog standard black matting?

leave the stains till after pointing. I use terram 1000 as a weed mat but thats because i have a 500sq/m roll in the yard. If you have some left over its fine to use.

We've been doing some of the pointing today and we've used buff on the spinning circle (on the left on the pics below) and black on the modak rose sandstone (on the right on the pics below). We're happy with both.

However, to try and blend the two together, we've tried using a stone grey to point the yellowey/grey riven flags in between (centre of pics). This doesn't seem to work (as its too similar to the flags and doesn't give any sort of contrast) and we're stumped as to what colour to use to point these to give a nice contrast against the flags. Any thoughts?

Its quite an unusual scheme you have and im not sure you can get anything that will tie the two together. I would point the entire thing with one the other in the hope of unifying it a bit.

Thanks. Think we're giving up on trying to blend the pointing and are focused on just finding a colour that will match the yellow/grey riven flags.

What colour would you choose for the pointing for those?

We're inclined to go for a dark grey (basalt/charcoal) but can't afford the £100 per tub for the Rompox / GFTK VDW

you will find it hard to get a dark grey joint without using a premixed product of some kind. Black mortar dye just does not last beyond a year or two when its used in paving.

Is there a way to joint the overhangs on our step section? Or are the overhangs typically left un jointed?

So the pointing should be right to very edge I.e including the overhang? Is that how you would joint it?

Really struggled with this today - the duct tape didn't seem to want to bond to the underside of the flags for some reason.

Do the underside of the flags need prime first before applying the duct tape? The tape was attempted to be put on approx an hour after it finished raining- could that have been the problem?

Using a polymeric (gtfk 840 plus) for this part of their jointing.

yea it needs to be dry. no need for priming but it wont stick if its at all dusty.

Been keeping up with your thread but know very little about laying slabs and jointing them. I have, however, used the stuff below on some brick joints on an external garden wall. It is very thick and doesn't sag when applied to the brick joints. I am just wondering whether it would be any good for your slab pointing at the edges if the current stuff is problematic. I used the SAND colour but this is a grey one.

Not sure if that's any help so apologies if it's not.

Thanks again for the replies. We'll need to ensure the flags are bones dry and free of dust - I suspect they weren't when the duct tape was applied.

The product linked above doesn't quite work as the colors are slightly different.

Any thoughts on how to do something similar with the jointing at the edges of the step section, where the slabs meet the wall?

The bottom of the slabs are smooth but the wall has a very rough edge. How on earth do we attach tape to that type of surface? See pics below.

plasticine also works. For the overhang you will need to rake back the bit you done as the overhanging edge piece needs to be set as one with the rest of the pointing. If you try and just stuff a bit in on the overhang it will never bond to anything and fall out. You want it to be a continuous piece with the main pointing.
Try plasticine on the wall bit.
